Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “We Believe in One True God”

In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1-3)

Eph. 5:15-21, says to sing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing & making melody to the Lord.” Today we look at “We Believe in One True God” written by Tobias Clausnitzer in 1668.Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)

yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. (1 Corinthians 8:6)

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, (2 Corinthians 4:13)

 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Colossians 2:5-11)

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17)

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. (Hebrews 1:3-4)

We Believe in One True God

by Tobias Clausnitzer (1668)

Eph. 5:15-21, says to sing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing & making melody to the Lord.” Today we look at “We Believe in One True God” written by Tobias Clausnitzer in 1668.We believe in one true God,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Ever-present help in need,
Praised by all the heav’nly host;
By whose mighty pow’r alone,
All is made and wrought and done.

We believe in Jesus Christ,
Son of God and Mary’s Son,
Who descended from His throne
And for us salvation won;
By whose cross and death are we
Rescued from sin’s misery.

We confess the Holy Ghost,
Who from both fore’er proceeds,
Who upholds and comforts us
In all trials, fears, and needs.
Blest and holy Trinity,
Praise forever be to Thee!
