Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”

In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
The Lord performs righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.
As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.
But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
To those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts to do them.
The Lord has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.
Bless the Lord, you His angels,
Mighty in strength, who perform His word,
Obeying the voice of His word!
Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him, doing His will.
Bless the Lord, all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion;
Bless the Lord, O my soul! (Psalm 103)

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

by Henry F Lyte (1834)

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
To His feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King!

Praise him for His grace and favor
To His people in distress.
Praise Him, still the same as ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Glorious in His faithfulness!

Fatherlike He tends and spares us;
Well our feeble frame He knows.
In His hand He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Widely yet His mercy flows!

Angels, help us to adore Him;
You behold Him face to face.
Sun and moon, bow down before Him,
Dwellers all in time and space.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise with us the God of grace!

  • Oh I just love that I sang this hymn out loud about an hour ago after seeing it in a very old red hymnbook that was my dad’s. I guess it pays to pay attention as I put away the red books used for decorating from Christmas. What a serendipity to read your post and to meet you today.

    Bless you!

    This is quite a lovely reading and I so very much appreciate your sharing it on your blog. I’m visiting from Mommynificient. I am partial to the old hymns and see no joy in the contemporary music though I respect their efforts at praise.
