Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “The Lord Is Risen Indeed”

The Lord Is Risen IndeedIn Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

The only true and pleasing worship we can offer our Lord is that which He has instructed us in His Word. Only songs that align with Scripture can be considered worthy candidates for offering our God for praise and worship.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

The Lord Is Risen Indeed

by Thomas Kelly (1802)

The Lord is risen indeed!
And are the tidings true?
Yes, we beheld the Savior bleed,
And saw Him living, too.

The Lord is risen, indeed!
Then Justice asks no more;The Lord Is Risen Indeed
Mercy and Truth are now agreed
Who stood opposed before.

The Lord is risen indeed!
Then is His work performed;
The captive surely now is freed,
And death, our foe, disarmed.

The Lord is risen indeed!
Then hell has lost his prey;
With Him is risen the ransomed seed
To reign in endless day.

The Lord is risen indeed!
He lives, to die no more;
He lives, the sinner’s cause to plead,
Whose curse and shame He bore.

The Lord is risen indeed!
Attending angels, hear!
Up to the courts of heaven with speed
The joyful tidings bear.

Then take your golden lyres,
And strike each cheerful chord;
Join, all ye bright celestial choirs,
To sing our risen Lord.

Amen.

    I had never heard of that hymn before. So many rich Truths throughout. Wonderful reminders of all that Jesus has done for us when He rose from the dead.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Indeed! So rich, thank you!! Since you are a fellow hymn-enthusiast, have you heard of Nathan Drake? He offer acoustic hymns on YouTube under the title “Reawaken,” you might enjoy them too!

    • Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have to check him out. 😀

  • Oh, I remember this hymn from church when I was growing up. In fact, as I read it, the tune popped into my head straight away! Thank you for reminding me of this lovely song of worship, and for sharing this post with us at Hearth and Soul.

    Love the last verse the best

    “Then take your golden lyres,
    And strike each cheerful chord;
    Join, all ye bright celestial choirs,
    To sing our risen Lord.”

    I am certain that there was music like no other the day He rose, Heaven and Earth singing. Amazing.
