Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Holy, Holy, Holy”

In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Holy, Holy, Holy”Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”
And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” (Revelation 4:8-11)

Holy, Holy, Holy

by Reginald Heber (1826)

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Holy, Holy, Holy”Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

  • This hymn reminds me of going to church with my grandmother … God was drawing me even then! Thanks for linking up on Mondays @ Soul Survival.

  • This has been one of my absolute favourite hymns ever since I was a little girl (it’s a tie between this one and Be Thou My Vision for favourite, lol). We are Anglican, and it is always the very first song in the Anglican hymnal and is often used for morning prayer. We sang it at my confirmation and at our daughter’s baptism, too. Captures my heart every time!

    • It is always the first hymn in the Baptist hymnals too. LOL I’d say it may be a close tie with Be Thou My Vision, as well. 😀

I love this hymn, another favorite is How Great Thou Art. My grandparents use to sing that all the time and my dad sung it at their funerals. Thanks for sharing this. I love your hymn days.

  • This is one of my favorite hymns. I love the reminder of God’s holiness. I look forward to casting down my crown at the feet of Jesus.

  • This is one of my favorite hymns, yet we seldom sing it at church. I think I will make a special request. Thank you so much for sharing this via Literacy Musing Mondays.
