Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “Hark, My Soul! It Is the Lord”

"Hark, My Soul! It Is the Lord" A hymn about the mighty saving work of salvation completed by Christ. Our love for Him is so weak in comparison to His love for His children..In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

Hark, My Soul! It Is the Lord

by William Cowper (1768)

Hark, my soul, it is the Lord!
‘Tis thy Savior, hear His word;
Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee,
“Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou Me?”

“I delivered thee when bound,
And, when bleeding, healed thy wound;
Sought thee wandering, set thee right,
Turned thy darkness into light.

"Hark, My Soul! It Is the Lord" A hymn about the mighty saving work of salvation completed by Christ. Our love for Him is so weak in comparison to His love for His children..“Can a woman’s tender care
Cease towards the child she bare?
Yes, she may forgetful be,
Yet will I remember thee.

“Mine is an unchanging love,
Higher than the heights above,
Deeper than the depths beneath,
Free and faithful, strong as death.

“Thou shalt see My glory soon,
When the work of grace is done;
Partner of My throne shalt be:
Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou Me?”

Lord, it is my chief complaint
That my love is weak and faint;
Yet I love Thee, and adore;
O for grace to love Thee more!

Amen

  • Another powerful hymn, sweet friend! I have realized recently just how much I long to hear more of these old hymns sung in church. Thanks for sharing and keeping the knowledge of them alive as so many churches don’t sing them much anymore.

    Thanks for the blessing of sharing songs. I read a C.S. Lewis quote on the Psalms this week: “The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance.” Blessings, visiting from #FaithonFire
