Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “The God of Abraham Praise”

In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “The God of Abraham Praise”Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him,
“I am God Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be blameless.
“I will establish My covenant between Me and you,
And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
“No longer shall your name be called Abram,
But your name shall be Abraham;
For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you. I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. (Genesis 17:1-7)

“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” (Jeremiah 31:33)

For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. (1 Corinthians 8:5-6)

Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. (Galatians 3:6-9)

And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”
(Revelation 4:8)

The God of Abraham Praise

by Daniel ben Judah Dayyan (1400)
translated by Newton Mann and Max Landsberg (1884-1885)

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “The God of Abraham Praise”The God of Abraham praise,
All praise be to His name,
Who was, and is, and is to be,
Fore’er the same!
The one eternal God,
Before what now appears;
The First, the Last: beyond all thought
His timeless years!

His Spirit flowing free,
High surging where it will;
In prophet’s word He spoke of old,
His voice speaks still.
Established is His law,
And changeless it shall stand,
It lives upon the human heart,
On sea or land.

He has eternal life
Implanted in the soul;
His love shall be our strength and stay
While ages roll.
Praise to the living God!
All praise be to His name,
Who was, and is, and is to be,
Fore’er the same!

Amen.
