Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “O Sacred Head Now Wounded”

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: O Sacred Head Now WoundedIn Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

O Sacred Head Now Wounded

by Bernard of Clairvaux (1153)

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: O Sacred Head Now WoundedO sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown;
How pale Thou are with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish, which once was bright as morn!

What Thou, my Lord, has suffered, was all for sinners’ gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest Friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever, and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee.

Be near when I am dying, O show Thy cross to me:
And for my succor flying, Come, Lord, to set me free:
These eyes, new faith receiving, From Jesus shall not move;
For he who dies believing, Dies safely, through Thy love.

Amen.

    I know the verse you got the title of this from. The Lord showed me this verse this week. I asked Him what to post and I had already taken some the pictures and it had a hymnal in it and He led me to this verse. Lovely way to share your faith by sharing a favorite hymn!

  • I have never heard this hymn but I absolutely love the prose. I am always blessed by the hymns you share here. Thank you for taking the time to enlighten our hearts and draw us closer to the Lord through sacred worship.
    Blessings,

    • I had not heard of it either. I love reading these old hymn. I really wish some of the modern song writers would rework some of these “forgotten” songs. Thank you so much for your kind words. 😀

    Many years ago when I was in our church’s choir we sang this hymn. It brings about such an emotional response the moment you are drawn into the Words, reminding us of all that Jesus did for us.

    Just now I watched a You Tube video of that song with scenes from the Passion of the Christ in the background. It’s something I should watch every day to remind me of all my Savior did for me.

    Thank you so much for sharing this and inspire me to worship this evening. I feel like I went to church.

    Blessings,

  • Came back to read it again- I love that you share these hymn series regularly. They are so solid and impactful. Thank you!

    Another that I have not heard before! I love the old hymns, that standards that I know, they soothe me and bring me closer to God, but I am really enjoying getting to know hymns that you share that I haven’t heard and listening to them on youtube. thanks for sharing!

    • I’ve started trying to attach YT videos of the songs if I can find them. However, next week’s hymn I can’t find a recording of it at all. 🙂

      My parents lead the music at the church I grew up in and feel like I have a fairly strong grasp of many hymns but I have discovered so many lately that I have never heard, including this one. 🙂
