Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: How Sad Our State of Nature Is

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: “O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done?”

Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: "O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done?"In Ephesians 5:15-21, we are given directions on how to properly live as Christians. One of these is to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

The only true and pleasing worship we can offer our Lord is that which He has instructed us in His Word. Only songs that align with Scripture can be considered worthy candidates for offering our God for praise and worship.

Each Monday, I share a song from history or present day that present a high view of God, praise Him, and teaches solid doctrine.

O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done?

by Charles Wesley (1742)

O Love divine, what hast Thou done!
Th’ incarnate God hath died for me!
The Father’s coeternal SonPsalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs: "O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done?"
Bore all my sins upon the tree!
The Son of God for me hath died:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified.

Behold Him, all ye that pass by,
The bleeding Prince of life and peace!
Come, sinners, see your Savior die,
And say, “Was ever grief like His?”
Come, feel with me His blood applied:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified.

Is crucified for such as you
To bring poor rebels back to God:
Believe, believe, the record true,
Sinners are bought with Jesus’ blood;
Pardon for sins flows from His side:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified.

Then let us sit beneath His cross,
And gladly catch the healing stream;
All things for Him account but loss,
And give up all our hearts to Him;
Of nothing think or speak beside:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified.

    I’ve just recently discovered your Monday hymn sharing day, and I just love it… It brings back memories of sitting in the church pew thumbing through the hymnals and signing these great songs. I don’t recall singing this one however, but I am sure maybe we did at least once. Thanks for sharing at #LMM where we are neighbors.

    • My parents led the music at our church so I am very familiar with many, many hymns. However, since starting this series, I have learned about so many I have never heard. I found a free pdf version of a very old hymnal so I don’t think a lot of them are common in the more modern hymnals.

  • I love this hymn from Wesley! Thanks for linking up at Together on Tuesdays.
