In the Refiner’s Fire

In the Refiner's FireAnd I will put this third into the fire,
and refine them as one refines silver,
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call upon my name,
    and I will answer them.
I will say, ‘They are my people’;
and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’” (Zechariah 13:9)

God never promised His followers an easy life. He has promised trials, tribulations, and persecution (2 Timothy 3:12, Matthew 10:22, John 16:33). We should never be surprised when they come. However, we can take comfort in knowing that even though the fire is hot, our loving, gracious, merciful Lord is Sovereign, He is in control. Everything He does is for our good and His glory (Romans 8:28).

“The design of Sin and Satan is the destruction of our graces as well as of our persons, and therefore they blow up the fire of affliction to the utmost, and would continue it until we are consumed. But ‘Hold,’ says the Lord, ‘My children are my gold, precious in my esteem, and they must pass through the fire to be refined, but not lie there until they suffer loss.’

In the Refiner's Fire“And therefore, when we are in the furnace our God sits by to see that the fire be not too hot, nor continued too long upon us, as the refiner watches his gold, manages it while in the furnace, and takes it out thence when it is fully purified. ‘He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.’ Malachi 3:3

“Well, then, my dear sister, since you are one of those who are precious in the sight of the Lord you must pass through the fire of affliction, but since it is the Lord’s fire, which He has appointed, which He manages, and which he will restrain at His pleasure, trust yourself in the hands of your infinitely wise and gracious Refiner and you shall come out of it both with present and eternal advantage. This affliction, as an instrument in the hand of God the Almighty agent, is at work upon you, and for you, to exercise and increase your graces here, and to prepare you for your future crown. Therefore, endure the trial, for, ‘Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.’ James 1:12” ~ Anne Dutton

As we feel the tongues of fire lick at our feet, rest in knowing the Refiner is watching, is controlling the heat, and is not slow to rescue and bless us in His perfect timing. Let the fire purify your faith, burn off the chaff, and cause you to find strength and peace only in Christ (Psalm 62:5, Psalm 28:7).

As you feel the tongues of fire lick at your feet, know the Refiner is controlling the heat. Click To Tweet

  • Praying for you in this time of refining. The verses are so powerful but that quote by Anne Dutton, that… my friend… enlightens the perspective. This is a topic that has been on replay as of late wherever I go, the people of God being put in the trial and over and over I keep hearing the call to praise Him… praise Him in the trial.
Blessings and prayer as you rest in His refining love.

  • While I was reading this, the words “May it purge me now and make of me what You require” from Mac Lynch’s song God’s Refining Fire kept coming to mind. The Lord is there and He knows just how hot the fire needs to be for us to be used of Him. Thank you for this reminder and for sharing it with Thankful Thursdays.

I love this verse in Zechariah about the refining of silver. There was a post on Facebook about this a few weeks back where a few women were in a bible study and they stopped on this verse and wanted to learn more. So the one lady went to a local fellow who happened to do this very process of refining silver. The process she discovered was amazing. The refiner paintstakingly sits over the silver and watches it with much attention to detail, it takes a while, and when it is done is when the refiner can see the image of himself in the silver. Isn’t that a beautiful description of what God does with us! It is a norrow road to Heaven, your right!

    • I heard about that story about refining silver a few years ago. Yes, it is very beautiful and really better illustrates the passages of refining in the Bible more clearly. Thanks for sharing. 😀

We all have trials in life. Through Christ’s Atonement, we can turn to him for the strength we need to get through, learn from our experience and become better than before. They key is to turn to Him. Enjoy this Christmas season!

Over the last 5 years our lives have been trial after trial. Sometimes we don’t even get time to catch our breath before the next one strikes. We continually remind ourselves that these trials are growing us as people. We have become stronger in life and in our faith, we see the miracles that God has put in place to encourage us to continue on. We are so much more compassionate and empathetic than we ever thought to be, when we are going through so much we can see that others are in pain too. We can reach out to them and pray for them, in our old lives we wouldn’t have even noticed their issues. And now we don’t take the small miracles for granted, we are so much more thankful and grateful. We wouldn’t have made it without the Lord carrying us the entire way.
